China to build 136-bed hospital in Nepal capital
Nepal's prime minister laid the cornerstone for a 136-bed hospital being built by China in the Himalayan kingdom's capital.
China pledged to construct the 35-million-dollar general hospital, intended for use by Nepal's 80,000 civil servants, during a visit by former Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji in May 2001.
Nepalese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said at the ceremony he hoped the hospital, slated for completion by the end of 2006, would be a symbol of friendship between the two neighbours.
China's ambassador, Sun Heping, described Nepal as China's "good friend" and said he hoped the hospital would strengthen bilateral ties.
As part of aid to the mountain nation wedged between China and India , Beijing is also building a polytechnical institution as well as an agricultural research institute.
